COMMUNITY Lights, 2020

From Munich to Pasadena, Portland to Williamsburg, this is a selection of street lights sent to me by friends and acquaintances while we stuck close to our neighborhoods: avoiding the spread of the pandemic. I'm so grateful to everyone who shared their lights with me! The deep feelings of connection which developed through this project brought color to my life and my paintings. Thank you. Enjoy!

LIGHT STANDARDS AND STREET LIGHTS

One of Hatheway's frequent subjects is street lights.  Why do these common objects figure so prominently in her work? There's the historian’s viewpoint: improved economy due to increased hours in the working day, enhanced safety from the common criminal, attraction to and vitality of urban centers… utility as public execution site... But the simple truth of the matter is: object fetishism. She likes the old designs.
