Hidden amongst the shrubbery on the slope of the Arroyo, is this OLD light. Its looong arch makes it look as though it will fall out of the bushes at any moment. It was carefully crafted with curls of iron and designed to jut out over the road.
From the look of the peeling paint and naked light bulb, I suspect this light hasn't seen much love over the years. But someone continues to change out that bulb and every night, like clockwork, that light casts a warm glow over the surrounding area.

The person who sent me this light said something to the effect of, "I don't think this is the kind of pretty light you're looking for, but you asked. So here is the light over my parking lot."
What's not to love about this light? There's something so real and relatable to purely functional lights. I feel young and a little rebellious thinking about hanging out beneath these lights in dark parking lots or in alleys. These are the "pass through" spaces. The places where conversations finish before departing. The places which greet us when we come home and the places which remain when we leave.

This image came to me via a friend of a friend. It's unusual, to me, because most of the public lighting in Southern California is freestanding. But throughout many older parts of the world, lights are often attached to buildings so as to not impede narrow passages.
The bricks in the photo became tangerine to me. In retrospect, that feels apropos. The colors in this painting are stimulating and vacillate between power and joy.

This street light was sent to me by a friend in Virginia. The photo was taken on a slightly overcast, summer day and the light stood alone, among lush, East Coast greenery.
When rendering this painting, I wanted to capture the isolation of the subject and the soothing greenery of the surrounds. The lantern itself required heat and the pinky peach globe took on the feeling of a beautiful flower bloom.

A golden eagle sits atop a Federalist designed street lantern in Alexandria, Virginia. This no-frills design is beautifully proportioned and speaks to the function-over-form attributes of early Americana.
This is the only piece in the series (so far) with grey planes of paint. They were an attempt to sooth the hot magentas and pinks, but they came out in jarring contrast. With the golden sunburst emanating from the lantern, this is an optimistic painting in which the light became the mediator between two competing planes.

When you see lights, standing stoically, in the middle of an open space, you know they are placed there strictly for security purposes. The advent of public lighting changed a lot of aspects of public life and no small part of that was due to an enhanced sense of safety in otherwise dark places.

In the earliest days of city-wide lock downs, the Los Angeles skies smelled of jasmine and were the most deep, clear periwinkle blue. That color wove its way through this collection of paintings.
In this particular piece, the shape of the street lamp and the blue color field joined to clearly create an ocean horizon. A lovely dreamscape. A portal.

I haven't been this ready to go out shopping in YEARS. Oh retail: our lovely brick-and-mortar shops where we dip into someone else's vision of an experience that will fill us with desire. Is Covid the death knell of experiential shopping? I say no! It's going to take some time, but we crave companionship and physicality beyond our homes. The retail experience will become more important than ever.
This light is from the Victorian-era Arcade Mall in Cleveland, Ohio. Opened in 1890, it is the oldest surviving mall in the United States. Look it up! It's GORGEOUS! Like Los Angeles' Bradbury building times 1000.

CLARITY, CALM AND FOCUS - Original Painting - 12" x 17"

This cityscape painting is inspired by a street light on a quiet street in Pasadena. The ornate, moulded globe is unique in its design: stacked high like a ballerina's bun. I was intrigued by the complexity of the globe and decided to use a soft color palette. The result is a calming painting which possesses qualities of translucence and stoic femininity.
The gilded lantern reflects light and gives the impression the light is "turned on."

MISTY MOUNTAIN VISTA - Original Painting - 12" x 17"

This colorful cityscape painting was inspired by a photo of a light (sent to me), seen while leaving home for a quick grocery run. This was in the very earliest days of the California lockdowns when the skies were crisp and clean. Up against the foothills in La Canada, it was still early Spring. The air was misty and the warm glow of these lanterns contrasted beautifully with the infamous purple-blue of the San Gabriel Mountains.
