NEW EXHIBITION with CASTELLI ART SPACE on ARTSY.NET

To me, Los Angeles’ streetlights are the angels referred to in the name of our city, standing stoically, quietly observing as we pass: shedding light, security and beauty on their surroundings. They yield a glow which casts magic into the evening air and commands a footprint far more significant than their slight statures would suggest. In many ways, these lights represent individuals: each has its own fingerprint, history and story. But the more I paint these iconic Los Angeles features, the more I realize that the classic designs are found throughout the United States and that my fondness for street lights is a universal romance story.

For this recent series of street light paintings, produced during Covid, I’ve asked people to send me photos of lights that they come across in their daily lives: either ones they see on walks in their neighborhoods, or outside their windows. Since my mobility has been limited due to the pandemic's Stay at Home orders, this has been a wonderful way to receive more source materials and connect with friends new and old. I’ve received photos of lights from New Hampshire, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Southern California,  Brussels and beyond. Many of them I’m weaving into this series of paintings. I encourage you to send me photos of your local street lights too!
