Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, 2014-present

Teale Hatheway is a mixed media painter working on the subjects of architecture, memory and visual awareness of place. For Coachella, Teale painted murals on 53 of Coachella's canvas tipis in an inversion of her two dimensional art practice. Focusing on the formal cone shape of the teepee while using a complex yet limited color palette, Teale explored a range of patterns made dynamic by their application to this culturally significant architectural form. The tipis are in the permanent collection of Goldenvoice and are available as living quarters at the annual Coachella music festival.

INTENTCITY, COACHELLA

InTentCity, Hatheway's installation commission for the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, is a collection of 53 tipis, hand painted for the Lake Eldorado camp ground. For the artist, the development of two dimensional patterns into three dimensional forms to create an immersive environment, was a rewarding inversion of her painting practice. The collection of tipis reflects the artist's interest in multi-cultural and interdisciplinary design and architecture, and resulted in a cohesive yet diverse installation.
