Before & After & How
(Alexandria, Virginia)

Community Sourced Street Light Series
Acrylic, metal leaf on paper.
17” x 12”
2020

A golden eagle sits atop a Federalist designed street lantern in Alexandria, Virginia. This no-frills design is beautifully proportioned and speaks to the function-over-form attributes of early Americana.

This is the only piece in the series (so far) with grey planes of paint. They were an attempt to sooth the hot magentas and pinks, but they came out in jarring contrast. With the golden sunburst emanating from the lantern, this is an optimistic painting in which the light became the mediator between two competing planes.

This is an original acrylic, metal leaf and varnish painting on paper.
