paintings > street lights

“Isolation” is an abstract urban cityscape painting by contemporary artist Teale Hatheway. In it, a beautiful, glowing lantern is seen casting light from behind a high hedge. Teale chose the subject of lamp posts as way to share a sense of optimistic interconnectedness with the world around her through the expression of beauty, history and public spaces. This pop-art styled artwork is composed entirely of fragmented, visual elements of assorted city street lights utilizing hand cut stencils made from drawings, aerosol paint and metal leaf on translucent acrylic sheet. The mixed media painting can be displayed individually or in clusters and can be mounted against a wall, hung away from a wall or suspended from a ceiling.

6th and grand Street Light

Metal leaf, ink, burning on cold pressed, heavyweight paper. 20" x 8". 2010.

SOLD

This series of monochromatic, black and white street lights came about at a time when I was deeply entrenched in experimenting with materials and techniques. The Great Recession was in full-swing and life was full of grit, determination and beauty (where you could find it). I had started to draw street lamps in color, but my color palette began to feel inappropriate.

For this version of my "Grand" downtown Los Angeles street light painting, I worked from photographs I had taken while walking 7th Street through the city. I sprayed atomized ink over a hand-cut stencil and then applied silver leaf to large swaths of the drawing. To achieve the mid tones, I applied gunpowder and burned it off. The result was a painting both glowing and gritty. Fun and messy. Just like life was at that time.

12K gold leaf halos top off this painting - my Los Angeles angels, glowing in the darkness.
